Inspector/ Packer



This individual performs the final assembly and tests required to ensure that the lifesaving technologies in high-altitude flight suits and space suits are functioning properly. Performs overhaul and repair of suits and retainers.


The requirements listed below are representative of the essential duties required:

  • Assemble, disassemble, and perform testing of various types of high-altitude pressure suit garments, gloves, flotation assemblies, helmets and other associate hardware.
  • Locate and punch hardware holes and install snap fasteners in various components during fabrication.
  • Perform lacing and hand sewing of various suit layers & components.
  • Conduct pressure retention (leak test) and static pressure tests on various items.
  • Check finished products to ensure quality standards are met prior to completion.
  • Use and maintain various tools and test equipment.
  • Keep a clean and well-maintained workspace.
  • Perform record keeping, ordering and inventory of materials used during production.
  • Classroom trainer of field suit technicians on maintenance and periodic overhaul procedures.
  • Ability to cross-train, learning other aspects of Life Support Equipment.
  • Ability to work with other departments, such as Engineering, Quality Assurance, and Government Inspectors.
  • Other duties as required.


  • Ability to read engineering drawings, fabrication, and test procedures.
  • Ability to follow directions accurately.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, able to read, write and speak English.
  • Knowledge of basic mathematics.
  • Attention to detail, organization, and time management skills.
  • Excellent hand-eye coordination.
  • Good technical and mechanical skills.
  • Familiar with and ability to use various types of hand tools, power tools, and precision measuring tools.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and collaborate effectively.
  • Position requires basic data input into company software systems such as email or customer service database.


  • High school degree or equivalent. Military technical schools or commercial schooling (desired but not required).
  • 1-3 years’ experience in or technical training in Aircrew Life support / Flight Equipment.
  • Basic, introductory on-the-job training.

Physical Demands/Efforts

  • Ability to move around the department as needed.
  • High degree of manual dexterity (perform repetitive motions with hands).
  • Ability and familiarity with the use of hand tools and powered hand tools, ex. screwdriver, drills, hole punch, and blow mallet, scissors, etc., and other manually operated tools.
  • Able to move compressed air tanks using a handcart.
  • Ability to use shop machinery ex: drill presses, saws, grinders etc.
  • Occasional physical exertion including the lifting of objects exceeding 20 pounds.


Mental & Visual Demands

  • Moderate concentration to effectively execute moderately complex tasks.
  • Able to read, write and speak in the English language.
  • Able to follow written and verbal directions.
  • Knowledge of basic mathematics.
  • Troubleshooting abilities to find small problems.
  • Able to read engineering drawings, fabrication, and test procedures.
  • Able to read analog and digital meters, i.e., flow, pressure, temperature, torque devices.
  • Able to read a precision rule (machinist’s scale, tape measure, etc.).
  • Visual effort to see small details.
  • Work requires frequent visual effort for extended periods of time.


Work Environment and Hazards

  • Some areas of the building are not climate controlled.
  • Occasional exposure to dust, heat and other environmental factors that may at times be objectionable.
  • Compressed Air Hazards.
  • Various chemical hazards such as solvents, lubricants, adhesives, etc.
  • Exposure to hazards that could result in injury and loss of time at work.
