Lead Electrical Design Engineer

Job Summary

As a strong contributor in the organization, the Lead/Expert Electrical Engineer provides technical expertise, exemplifies Hologic’s Passion, Purpose, and Promise in delivering solutions to our customers, and navigates across functions to influence positive outcomes. Also demonstrates exceptional problem-solving and innovation at all technical levels – circuit design to full system, along with architectural strategies. Excellence in FPGA and PCB designs a must, including:

  • FPGA System on Chip, VHDL, Verilog, embedded processors, and simulation
  • PCB skills – embedded processors, interfacing circuits, point of load power regulation, creation of software test tools, PCB signal & power integrity, and understand EMC compliance

Applies expertise and technical skills to new and sustaining world class x-ray detector imaging products.

Acts independently to determine methods and procedures on new or special assignments.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The incumbent may be asked to perform other function-related activities in addition to the below mentioned responsibilities as reasonably required by business needs.

  • As a key member of the Detector Design team, the successful candidate will be responsible for the Main Acquisition Controller(s) for all detector products - developing next generation designs and continuous improvements for current products. This includes FPGA and PCB design experience listed above.
  • Support software test tools to be used by the development team to optimize the panel detector imaging sub-system.
  • Demonstrate innovative solutions to problems, champion improvements into products & processes, and act as a troubleshooter and key problem solver.
  • As a key lead FPGA/PCB engineer, you will also be contributing to transformative technical innovations in other divisions.
  • Committed to business objectives and models’ accountability of assigned tasks, also holding others accountable. Promotes a sense of urgency to task completion.
  • Participate and sometimes supervise electrical engineering activities and staff with overall responsibility for delivering high quality prototypes/products on time and on budget that meet or exceed requirements.
  • Work closely with key stakeholders to define new products and ensure products meet or exceed customer requirements.
  • Significant technical contributor in the creation of EE specifications, guidelines, procedures, project planning and task scheduling.
  • Recommend and develop team expertise in new tools and technologies.
  • Mentor and coach other engineers for personal and organizational development.
  • Documentation
    • Ability to create and manage documentation in accordance with design control procedures.
    • Strong understanding of Document Revision Control, Product Life Cycle, and (PCO/ECO) Prototype/Engineering Change Orders
  • Test
    • Must be able and willing to perform hands-on fabrication, testing, and repair work that is required to support assigned activities as needed when support from technicians may not be readily available.
    • Ability to write embedded code to test designs.
    • Candidate must have experience and be proficient at using laboratory test equipment used in electrical engineering work. This includes but is not limited to:
      • Multi-meters, Oscilloscopes, Spectrum analyzers, Function generators, Logic Analyzers
  • Communication
    • Ability to clearly present status, ideas, concepts, and results to all levels of management.
    • Ability to persuade and influence stakeholders - other Engineering functions, Program Management, Procurement, Manufacturing, Quality, Regulatory, and Service.
    • Conduct formal design reviews.


  • Experience developing products in an ISO & FDA-regulated (or other regulated) environment.
    • Understanding of medical device compliance and safety standards a plus.
  • Excellent knowledge of practical electrical and fabrication solutions for the design of complex PCBs using FPGA SoC designs, along with their integration into system level products.
  • Understanding of product development and lifecycle.
  • Exceptional problem-solving and troubleshooting skills – from circuit to full system.
  • Demonstrates mature engineering judgement based on solid engineering principals.
  • Models’ excellence in quality and design practices.

Skills/Specialized Knowledge

  • Design: Ability to design at all levels – architectural to circuit.
    • Strong digital design skills
    • Strong PCB CAD design tool skills – Zuken or Mentor Graphics a Plus
    • Strong FPGA design tool skills: Intel (Altera) Quartus preferred
    • VHDL, Verilog languages a must
    • Python, ‘C’ or ‘C++’ preferred
  • Control of imaging panel technology a plus


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Master’s degree preferred.


  • Minimum of eight years’ relevant working experience in a disciplined product device field – medical preferred.
