Senior Sustainability Engineer

 

Job Summary

Working individually and with cross-functional teams, you will be responsible for designing solutions primarily for production issues or cost reductions, along with documenting revision changes needed for medical products following strict Quality Management Systems and Engineering Change processes. You will be sharing expertise and experience as part of an world class engineering team – and supported by SMEs.

Tasks can vary from component selection and analysis, printed circuit board re-design, electro-mechanical solutions, cable and harnessing design, power distribution, and assisting manufacturing or service to resolve problems.

The successful candidate will lead and coordinate with other internal functions and external suppliers to identify and execute electrical sustaining projects. Apply project management and problem-solving skills to supervise multiple activities concurrently.

As a Lead Sustaining Engineer, you’ll provide time-critical solutions to our customers, and navigate across functions and business operations to influence positive outcomes. Often will supervise the activities of others and provide guidance and training to contractors and engineering staff.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The incumbent may be asked to perform other function-related activities in addition to the below mentioned responsibilities as reasonably required by business needs.

  • Successful candidate will have an in-depth understanding of electrical systems, will serve as a troubleshooter and will be key problem solver on projects, and must demonstrate a strong commitment to production needs.
  • Work collaboratively with all functions and team members – e.g. program management, field service, manufacturing, electrical, mechanical, compliance and reliability engineers.
  • Manage multiple projects and priorities defined by program or functional management.
  • Create supporting documentation (e.g. CAD package updates, specifications, verification procedures & reports, engineering change notices)
  • Must support design of test control apparatus and equipment, and determine methods, procedures, and conditions for testing the engineered products and associated apparatus.
  • Involved in the specification, evaluation, and selection of electronic & electro-mechanical components.
  • Directs activities to ensure that manufacturing, construction, installation, and operational testing conform to functional specifications and customer requirements.
  • Ensures design, fabrication, maintenance, and repair methods/processes are developed as well as executed in a manner, which supports all quality standards.
  • Component engineering and printed circuit re-design for obsolescence and product improvement.
  • Supports Design Transfer activities from R&D to Sustaining Engineering.
  • Working knowledge of PCBA manufacturing processes.
  • Supports CAPA projects and VIP projects, Cost reduction projects, EOL projects, Operations request for support.

 

Qualifications

  • Ability to collaborate effectively in cross functionally teams, with technical and non-technical colleagues
  • Understands device product manufacturing and product development & lifecycle processes
  • Understanding of medical device compliance and safety standards a plus.
  • Must be able and willing to perform hands-on fabrication, testing, and repair work required to support assigned activities as needed when support from technicians may not be readily available
  • Ability to write test code to test designs
  • Proficient at using laboratory test equipment used in electrical engineering work. This includes most of the following:
    • Multi-meters, Oscilloscopes, Spectrum analyzers, Function generators, Logic Analyzers
  • Proficiency in at least one CAD tool suite for PCB design a must
  • Proficiency in revision control for design and documentation a must
  • Proficiency in at least one software language a plus - e.g. Python or C/C++
  • Familiarity with
    • electronics manufacturing industry standards and practices (e.g. IPC 600/610)
    • Design for manufacturability (DFM)
    • Failure mode and effect analysis (FMEA)
  • Proficiency in Word Office Suite a must – Excel, Word, PowerPoint

 

Skills/Specialized Knowledge

  • Demonstrates logical thinking and mature engineering judgement
  • Must be able to test and debug medium complexity electrical (e.g. line distribution sub-systems), electro-mechanical (e.g. motors), and digital electronic designs to a component level
  • Must be able to lead/supervise multiple projects, provide guidance, and make assignments to engineering staff and contractors
  • Leadership experience demonstrating soft skills – mentoring and/or cross-functional teams

 

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering

 

Experience

  • Minimum of Bachelor’s Degree and 8+ years relevant working experience in a medical device field.
  • Or Masters’ Degree and 5+ years relevant working experience in a medical device field.

 

Additional Details

  • Ability to travel as required (~10% or less)
