Supervisor, Machine Operations


A leadership role in which the incumbent will work on problems of moderate scope and complexity, where analysis of situations or data requires a review of a variety of factors. Opportunities to use judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine the appropriate course of action. The ideal candidate will be highly improvement driven and adaptable to changing priorities. While utilizing various tools for cutting, measurement, and inspection, the candidate will work on designing and fabricating simple work holding fixtures for use on Lathes and Milling Machines. Day-to-day duties will include setting up and operating manual Lathes and Milling Machines, Multi-axis Computer Numerical Control (aka CNC) Lathes and Multi-axis Computer Numerical Control Milling Machines as well as programming Multi-axis Computer Numerical Control Lathes and Multi-axis CNC Milling Machines and using ‘Surfcam’, Mastercam and manual methods.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Direct and oversee the day-to-day activities of the department and its Computer Numerical Control machinists
  • Examine production schedules and deadlines and determine how to best schedule employees and activities to complete jobs safely and efficiently
  • Provide direct, hands-on troubleshooting
  • Ensure that the work is complete according to the expected need date and identify opportunities to enhance efficiency and areas for machine stoppages or slowdowns
  • Enhance processes and procedures without sacrificing safety
  • Manage training, and train new hires in all aspects of the job. This can include instruction and direct supervision on programming Computer Numerical Control machines and ensuring that the equipment is operating safely and efficiently
  • May develop or use checklists or digital reporting methods to maintain machine and personnel inspections, improve reporting and hazard reduction
  • Service machining equipment and tooling as needed
  • Prepare reports for leadership. These reports will include daily activity reports, information related to machine issues, and employee evaluations.

  • ***This role balances team leadership and coordination with a high level of technical knowledge and machine programming skills. The supervisor must be familiar with safety procedures and best practices to prevent employee injuries, maintain overall safety from day to day

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for directing and overseeing the day-to-day activities of the department and its Computer Numerical Control machinists
  • Examining production schedules and deadlines and determining how to best schedule employees and activities to complete jobs safely and efficiently
  • Provide direct, hands-on in troubleshooting and in programming machine operation

Qualifications

Minimum:

  • High School Diploma coupled with 10+ years’ experience working in a machine shop
  • 2+ years’ experience managing teams and/or leading project teams

Preferred:

  • Knowledge of Electrical discharge machining (aka EDM) – 4-axis Wire machines programming and operation
  • Ability with designing and fabricating work-holding fixtures for use on Lathes and Milling Machines
  • Excellent communication skills and be comfortable working with coworkers and staff engineers in an aerospace machine shop environment
  • Capable of adapting to changing priorities
  • Ability to maintain a positive and proactive approach to resolve conflict and/or business issues
  • Demonstrate flexibility and adaptability to changing priorities and assignments; must possess the ability to prioritize tasks and team goals consistent with larger business objectives
