Job Title: Compensation Specialist

Compensation, Benefits, and Employment Type
  • Duration: 3-year contract
  • Pay range: $60-$83/hr 
  • Benefits include medical insurance, 10 days of Paid Time Off, 11 paid holidays, and a 401(k) match

Position Summary

Reporting to the Compensation Manager, the Compensation Specialist will lead and execute critical compensation projects on a contract basis. This role is ideal for a seasoned professional with deep expertise in total rewards, job architecture, and pay structure design, who thrives in a fast-paced, project-oriented environment.

Responsibilities

The Compensation Specialist will be responsible for one or more of the following project areas, depending on organizational needs:

General Compensation Support

  • Develop and implement compensation programs, policies, and procedures aligned with the organization's compensation philosophy.
  • Ensure compliance with federal and state compensation regulations.

Project Work: Job Architecture Design

  • Redesign and enhance the job architecture framework, including job families, career levels, title governance, and FLSA classifications, ensuring consistency and scalability.
  • Conduct in-depth analysis of salary grade and band structures, benchmarking against market data and ensuring internal equity.
  • Model the financial impact of proposed compensation changes and develop transition strategies.
  • Create compensation administration guidelines, toolkits, and manager resources.
  • Lead communication and change management efforts to support successful adoption of compensation initiatives.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business, Finance, or a related field; Master's degree preferred.
  • 8+ years of progressive compensation experience, including hands-on expertise in:
    • Job analysis and job evaluation
    • Job leveling and career framework design
    • Salary structure and pay band design
    • Market pricing and compensation benchmarking
  • Proven track record of delivering complex compensation projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Project coordination experience, including managing timelines, collaborating across functions, and executing project deliverables.
  • Proficiency with major compensation survey platforms, such as Radford/AON, Mercer, Pearl Meyer, or TSG.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including financial modeling, pivot tables, VLOOKUPs/XLOOKUPs, and data analysis.
  • Strong analytical, communication, and presentation skills with the ability to provide recommendations to HR leadership and executive stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certified Compensation Professional (CCP) designation strongly preferred.
  • Experience with HRIS and compensation management platforms, such as SAP, SuccessFactors, or Payscale MarketPay.
  • Strong knowledge of federal and state compensation compliance requirements.
  • Experience working in government contracting, federally funded organizations, research institutions, or similarly complex environments is a plus.

Additional Information

  • Hybrid work arrangement; onsite presence required two days per week.
  • Interim clearance or equivalent background screening may be sufficient to begin employment, if applicable.
  • Interview process typically includes an initial video interview with the hiring manager followed by additional team interviews.
