Description:
We are seeking a Controls Engineer to support the design, integration, troubleshooting, and commissioning of advanced automation systems. This role is responsible for electrical design, control system development, and hands-on problem solving for custom automation cells and standard machine offerings.
The Controls Engineer will serve as a critical technical resource, bridging CNC machines, robotic systems, and third-party integrated equipment through control logic, communication infrastructure, and system validation. This position is ideal for an engineer who enjoys hands-on work, solving complex automation challenges, and collaborating across engineering and manufacturing teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop complete electrical control schematics for custom automation cells and standard machinery using CAD software.
- Create, program, and modify industrial control logic, including ladder logic, to manage machine communication, I/O systems, and integrated equipment.
- Design and configure electrical hardware systems, including safety circuits, HMIs, sensors, actuators, and related components.
- Troubleshoot complex electrical, software, and hardware issues during system build, debug, installation, and commissioning.
- Support in-house system validation and assist with customer-site start-up and integration activities.
- Travel to customer facilities to provide commissioning, troubleshooting, and service support.
- Collaborate with mechanical engineers, technicians, machinists, and external automation partners to ensure successful system integration.
- Develop and maintain technical documentation, including electrical drawings, wiring diagrams, component specifications, and control descriptions.
- Support continuous improvement efforts related to automation performance and system reliability.
Required Qualifications & Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Controls Engineering, or related technical discipline.
- Experience designing and troubleshooting industrial control systems, automation equipment, or machine systems.
- Strong proficiency with electrical schematic design and CAD drafting.
- Experience programming industrial control logic, including ladder logic and I/O management.
- Hands-on troubleshooting experience with electrical systems, wiring, controls hardware, and software integration.
- Knowledge of industrial communication protocols such as Ethernet/IP and Profinet.
- Ability to read, interpret, modify, and create engineering drawings and technical documentation.
- Strong understanding of industrial electrical standards and safety requirements (NFPA 79 experience preferred).
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with CNC machine integration, robotic automation, or custom machinery.
- Familiarity with FANUC robots or similar robotic systems.
- Experience supporting equipment installation and commissioning at customer sites.
- Certifications such as ISA Certified Control Systems Technician (CCST) are a plus.
