Description:
We are seeking an experienced Cost Accountant to join a manufacturing organization in Fitchburg, MA. This is a hands-on accounting role supporting a significant manufacturing operation, with a strong focus on cost accounting, standard costing, operational finance, budgeting, forecasting, internal controls, and profitability analysis.

Manufacturing experience is required. We are specifically looking for a true cost accountant who has worked within a manufacturing environment and understands how manufacturing operations, production costs, inventory, and standard costs flow through the P&L and balance sheet.

Experience supporting aerospace or other highly regulated manufacturing environments is highly desirable.

What You'll Do
  • Manage and analyze standard costs, manufacturing costs, inventory, variances, and operational financial performance
  • Partner closely with Operations and other functional leaders to understand how business decisions impact costs, profitability, the P&L, and balance sheet
  • Prepare and analyze general ledger, asset, liability, capital, and other accounting entries
  • Prepare and analyze profit & loss statements, balance sheets, management reports, and financial analyses
  • Investigate and reconcile financial discrepancies and identify root causes
  • Support annual budgeting, financial planning, forecasting, and performance measurement
  • Monitor and maintain effective internal controls and accounting compliance
  • Apply GAAP, accounting policies, and relevant cost accounting principles to business activities
  • Analyze financial trends and provide management with information needed to make sound business decisions
  • Recommend financial actions based on analysis of accounting and operational data
  • Develop, improve, and document accounting policies and procedures
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives involving accounting processes, systems, and reporting
  • Participate in cross-functional and special project teams
  • Identify opportunities to improve reporting and processes through automation, Excel macros, Power BI, and other technology
  • Work directly with Operations on projects and initiatives that improve efficiency, cost management, and profitability
  • Provide guidance and support to less experienced team members as needed

What We're Looking For
Required:
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or a related field
  • 2–5 years of accounting experience with significant hands-on cost accounting experience
  • Previous experience working in a manufacturing company is required
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing cost accounting and standard costing
  • Understanding of how operational activity affects the P&L and balance sheet
  • Working knowledge of GAAP
  • Experience with budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting, and variance analysis
  • Experience with internal controls, compliance, and accounting policies/procedures
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Proficiency with automated accounting systems, Excel, and standard business applications
  • Ability to communicate effectively with both accounting/finance teams and manufacturing/operations leaders

Highly Preferred:
  • Aerospace manufacturing experience
  • Knowledge of Cost Accounting Standards (CAS) and/or Federal Acquisition Regulations (FAR)
  • Experience with Power BI, Excel macros, or other financial/reporting automation
  • Demonstrated experience leading or contributing to process improvement projects
  • Experience partnering directly with Operations on cost, productivity, or profitability initiatives

The Ideal Candidate
The strongest candidate will be more than a general accountant. We're looking for someone who has lived and breathed manufacturing cost accounting—someone who can walk into a production environment, understand what is driving costs and variances, connect operational activity to financial results, and explain those findings to both Finance and Operations.

If you can provide examples of cost accounting projects, process improvements, automation, or initiatives where you partnered with manufacturing Operations, we'd like to hear from you.
