Mechanical Engineering Group Overview
The Mechanical Engineering Group develops innovative design solutions for advanced technology prototypes across ground, maritime, air, and space platforms. Key application areas include laser communications, high-energy laser systems, optical sensing, biological detection, and large-scale antenna systems.
The group’s core capabilities include precision engineering, opto-mechanics, mechanisms, electronics packaging, large and lightweight structures, composite materials, and additive manufacturing. It also serves as the Engineering Division’s center for 3D CAD design and data management, supporting all phases of program execution from concept development through system integration and testing.
Position Summary
The selected candidate will support the mechanical design, integration, and testing of complex mechanical, opto-mechanical, and electro-mechanical systems as part of a multidisciplinary team under the direction of a Technical Project Manager.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, integrate, and test complex hardware systems from concept through fabrication and field evaluation
- Contribute to solutions involving structures, mechanisms, thermal systems, optics, and electronics
- Collaborate closely with design, analysis, and test teams
- Communicate technical progress and results to internal and external stakeholders
Basic Qualifications
- Experience in mechanical design, assembly, and environmental testing of high-reliability systems (electronic, electro-optic, or opto-mechanical), preferably in DoD or aerospace environments
- Proficiency with SolidWorks or similar 3D CAD software
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work both independently and in team settings
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience developing opto-mechanical or electro-mechanical systems for aircraft and/or spacecraft
- Background in DoD, military, or aerospace applications
- Additional experience in opto-mechanical design
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Aerospace Engineering (required)
- Master’s degree preferred
- Typical experience:
- Master’s + 3+ years relevant experience, or
- Bachelor’s + 5+ years relevant experience
Additional Requirements
- Active SECRET clearance required at start
- Ability to travel to meetings and field sites as needed
